Ayiri Central, Ukusijoni Sub-county, Adjumani
A community built a school from a seed.
Maaji Seed Secondary School was founded by teachers, elders and community leaders in 2016 to bring affordable, quality education to refugees and the host community of rural Ukusijoni.

Our Story
From a request letter to a full seed school.
Most of the school's founding teachers came from Dzaipi SS, Adjumani Model SS, Pakele Comprehensive College, Monsignor Bala, and St Mary's Girls SS — professionals who chose to bring their experience home to Ukusijoni.
After consulting opinion leaders, elders and religious leaders, the idea was sold to the community, and Maaji Senior Secondary School was established in October 2016. The community showed real interest from the start — this was never a school built for a community, but one built by it.
That progress came through repeated consultation with senior educationalists, both in the district and at the Ministry headquarters in Kampala, culminating in government recognition as a full SEED school.

Aims & Objectives
Why the community built this school.
Access
Provide cheap and quality education to the community for positive transformation, supplementing the only government-aided secondary school in the neighbouring sub-county.
Equity
Create an academic environment convenient for improving performance in the sciences for both girls and boys, regardless of gender.
Excellence
Become a leading institution for academic excellence in the region, attracting learners from beyond Ukusijoni to a quality education in a rural setting.
Character
Inculcate in learners a sense of fear of God and moral values, and instil discipline and responsibility so students become responsible citizens of Uganda, Africa and the world.
Unity
Spearhead unity and nationalism through national programs, and provide fertile ground for unifying different ethnicities — including learners from South Sudan — through education.
Partnership
Advance public-private partnership by creating local jobs directly and indirectly — helping fight poverty, unemployment and crime in the sub-county.
